Tyzur glanced down at his arm, turning his wrist slightly as he considered Greggory's offer. “I have wondered whether making it less conspicuous might put some patients at ease. It's not always easy to tell how someone will react to it, and I'd rather they felt comfortable talking to their doctor.” He flexed the additional fingers, watching them move with practised precision. “On the other hand, I've spent a long time getting used to it as it is. I'd be reluctant to change its appearance just for the sake of appearances, particularly if it meant compromising its functionality.” His gaze returned to Greggory. “Still, if there's a way to make it less unsettling for patients without compromising its usefulness, I'd be interested in exploring it. I'd be curious to hear what you have in mind.”

Greggory was silent as he considered what Tyzur was telling him about his arm, looking at the blatantly cybernetic fingers that still matched the Borg aesthetic. "Sure, I can understand wanting to use the best functions available to you."
Raising his left arm, he regarded it. "I may be an XO by rank, but I'm an engineer by trade. Of course I've made adjustments over the years." Raising a finger and pointing with the other hand, he started counting. "Laser micro-cutter, harmonic adjuster, molecular bonder, integrated communication system, and a material scanner taken from an engineering tricorder." Flexing his wrist, he smiled at Tyzur. "Not to mention the minor adjustments to strength and reflex speed over the years." "If you'd like, I could take another look at your own schematics, sometime. Even without removing the integrated systems, we may be able to reduce the profile so it isn't as bulky. Maybe even work out some synth-flesh so it wouldn't be as blatant. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with the way it looks, but I can understand if needing to work around patient's reflexive responses can interfere with your work." He gave an easy smile. "On the other hand, it's your arm. If you're satisfied with its performance, so am I."

“The arm itself isn't keeping me alive, no. The difficulty is how thoroughly it's integrated with my nervous system. Removing it would risk damaging perfectly healthy tissue, including nerves that would be difficult to repair. We decided it was safer to leave it in place.” Tyzur glanced down at his cybernetic arm, flexing its fingers. “I have made some modifications over the years, though. The original Borg appendage didn't have fingers. I added these myself, partly to restore some of the dexterity I'd lost, but also…” He paused, turning his hand slightly as he regarded it. “I wanted something that felt a little more like my own hand again. A little more humanoid.” He returned his attention to Greggory. “Some of the original Borg systems are actually rather good at what they do. Slightly more efficient than their Starfleet equivalents in certain respects. I've kept a few of those functions, after making sure I can control them independently.” He glanced at Greggory's bio-synthetic arm. “Have you had to make any adjustments to yours, or was it fairly straightforward once the replacement was fitted?”

Greggory relaxed a bit more as Tyzur encouraged his questioning. "I read in your file that they were unable to safely remove the arm. Does it perform some critical function or did it just cause a feedback with your cybernetic physiology? Have you been able to modify it at all since your liberation?"
He stayed in place as Tyzur continued to run his tests, trying not to let the conversation derail his primary reason for being here. |

Tyzur gave a small shake of his head. “You needn't apologise, Commander. It's a reasonable assumption to make.” He glanced briefly at his cybernetic arm before returning his attention to Greggory. “I've had a great deal of time to get used to mine, and I suppose I've developed a certain professional curiosity about the subject as well.” A faint smile crossed his face. “By all means, ask away.”

Greggory relaxed a little. "Sorry, Doc. Not everyone who shares your experience is so open about it, so I didn't know how sensitive a topic it is for you."
"If you're comfortable talking about it, I did have a few questions about your cybernetic arm." |

Tyzur looked up from the console, his attention shifting to Greggory. The sudden change in the XO's demeanour seemed to catch him off guard. “It's quite all right, Commander. I was the one who brought probes into the conversation.” He offered a small, reassuring smile. “Besides, I'd be a rather poor medical officer if I couldn't discuss nanoprobes without taking offence.” His gaze lingered on Greggory for a moment before returning to the console, though he kept an eye on the readings.

Greggory followed along as Tyzur moved through his scans.
"I'm sure we can rig up an equivalent nanoprobe." He had said reflexively as a joke, the association intended to draw out a laugh. Instead, he froze up, his heartrate climbing as his throat tightened. He looked across the console at Tyzur.
"Sorry, Doc. That was in poor taste." |

Tyzur considered that for a moment, then gave a small nod. “That sounds reasonable. I'll make sure you have a summary of anything significant, and if something starts affecting the department more broadly, you'll hear about it.” He glanced down at the console. “And for the moment, you can just stand there. I'll start with the non-invasive scans, then we'll see if anything needs closer attention.” He activated the scanner and watched the first readings populate. “Though if the results are inconclusive, I may have to requisition a type 8 probe.” He paused. “For medical purposes, of course.”

Greggory watched Tyzur work, looking over him with some particular interest while he thought of his answer.
"Beyond changes to shift schedules, personnel issues, or ship-wide medical announcements, I'd like to get a rough summary of what goes on semimonthly. Not for any quotas or justification reasons, but I'd just like to keep an eye on how each department is operating. That way, if a lapse in efficient operation starts to interfere with crew functionality, I can bring it up with you. An external view, if you will, so we can coordinate and devise solutions." He glanced at the console Tyzur had finished inputting information and commands. "So, do you need me to do anything specific or just stand here?" |

Tyzur gave a small nod as he moved toward the examination console. “I have. It's my first proper starship posting, so there's been a bit of an adjustment, but I think I'm going to like it here.” He brought up Greggory's medical record and began entering the preliminary details, checking that the information from his previous physical was still current. “And I wouldn't worry about the delay. We've all had rather a lot to organise since coming aboard.” He looked over the information on the display, then glanced back toward Greggory. “Although, since this is our first chance to speak properly, there is something I've been meaning to ask. What do you expect from your department heads beyond standard procedure? I'm interested in how you prefer things to work aboard your ship.”

Greggory walked in with a PADD in his hand, multitasking already, but he slipped it into the pouch on his hip as he greeted the doctor. "Good morning, Doctor Tyzur. Sorry I had to put this off so long after launch. I know how important having accurate documentation is."
He walked over to the exam area and turned to face Tyzur. "I've certainly got time to talk. I hope you have settled well in Sickbay?" |

“Baseline” Lt. Tyzur, Chief Medical Officer Lt. Cmdr. Greggory Griffith, XO Stardate: 58807.15, 0930h Location: USS Vanguard *** The morning had been quiet in Sickbay, at least by Tyzur's standards. With no emergencies or unexpected injuries to deal with, he had been left with the more mundane side of his duties: routine examinations, medical records, and the assorted administrative work that accompanied being Chief Medical Officer. He glanced over the day's schedule as the doors opened and Greggory entered. “Commander Griffith. Good morning. It’s a pleasure to meet you properly.” He gestured toward the examination area. “This should be fairly routine. Vitals, scans, neurological checks, the usual. We can talk while I work, if you have the time.”
