Greetings, intrepid crew of the USS Vanguard!
I'm Steve, reporting in from in the rural mountains of New Brunswick, Canada. I've been a tabletop gamer since 1980 both as player and GM, and a free-form RPer since 2018. Aside from some half-watched and half-understood late-night reruns of TOS, my first real exposure to Star Trek was when my dad, who worked overnights at a TV station packaging commercials into the appropriate gap of shows, sent me a bootleg copy he made of Best of Both Worlds. I did my best to try and catch all TNG episodes - usually out of order due to syndication across multiple channels - before going on to watch DS9, end to end, as well as Voyager and Enterprise. While Trek is not my all-time favourite sci-fi franchise, it's certainly up there, though I'm not as big on the newer series. Outside of this sim, I play the Chief Engineer on the USS Yorktown in a bi-weekly Star Trek Adventures group through Discord and Roll20, and while that sort-of scratches my Trek itch, the opportunity that Laurie presented to participate in an RP Trek group was too good to pass up! Kovar, my Vulcan Master-at-Arms for the Vanguard, it going to be a bit of a work-in-progress: My initial concept of him has a base layer of Spock/Tuvok, upon which a generous helping of R. Lee Eamey's Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is placed, covered with a thin ganache of George Carlin, finished with a light dusting of Care Bear. He's responsible for the security and discipline of the crew, personal combat efficiency, criminal investigations, and physical fitness. He takes his job seriously, having performed the role in various capacities for 45 years... But also understands that sometimes, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and that a sympathetic ear is helpful for crew morale. And intelligence gathering. Though he was raised among Vulcans and served on many Vulcan-only postings, he never considered pursuing Kolinahr training, and does not strictly adhere to the teachings of Surak... Possibly an aspect of his personality, possibly having spent so many years among other races and their cultures. I'm also going to be creating a shuttle pilot character, based fairly heavily on The A-Team's Murdoch. ;) Looking forward to meeting everyone and playing together!
