Iryna Mikhailovna Nakhimova was born on Earth in Sevastopol, Ukraine, on January 3, 2362, to Mikhail Sergeyevich Nakhimov and his wife Olena Ivanivna Nakhimova (née Kovalenko). She is the young sister of Oleksandr Mikhailovich, born in 2357. Her father, Mikhail, had served as a Helm Officer in Starfleet, though he resigned his commission in 2355 at the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. After leaving the service, Mikhail settled in Sevastopol and became a civilian shuttle pilot specializing in the orbital transport of large-scale industrial replicators which were manufactured in the region. Her mother, Olena, is a Federation civilian and registered nurse. Iryna's parents met by chance when Mikhail injured himself while working in his home and had sought treatment at the hospital where Olena was then employed. Iryna's paternal grandmother, Olga, lived with the family throughout her childhood, and though often regarded as stubborn by both of Iryna's parents, Olga was a warm and steadfast presence in the lives of her grandchildren. She frequently encouraged Oleksandr and Iryna to "reach for Gagarin," a phrase that quietly frustrated Mikhail, who had grown more cautious about Starfleet after his own years of service. As a child, Iryna was active and athletic. She trained in gymnastics during the warmer months and figure skating in the winter. She also took up Greco-Roman wrestling, practicing regularly with her older brother Oleksandr, whose competitive matches she admired. In addition, she developed a strong love of ice hockey-much to the quiet disapproval of her mother, a former world-class figure skater who preferred that her daughter focus on the discipline and precision of skating rather than what she viewed as a less structured and brutish sport. Iryna also studied the violin from a young age and continued to play into adulthood, often turning to the instrument when she felt depressed or emotionally unsettled, finding that it helped calm and center her. Of all her early influences, none shaped her more deeply than her father. Iryna frequently accompanied Mikhail on his orbital shuttle flights, sitting on his lap at the controls as a young girl. On occasion he even allowed her to handle the consoles herself. The two also bonded closely over their shared fascination with 20th-century Earth aviation history, and those early experiences left a lasting mark on her. In 2374, at the height of the Dominion War, Oleksandr defied his father's advice and entered Starfleet. Five years later, in 2379, Iryna followed a similar path. Despite Mikhail's reservations-and his specific warning that she remain mindful of the seedier, darker elements that could exist within the service-she applied to Starfleet Academy. Owing to her exceptional academic record, she was granted early admission at the age of seventeen and left to attend in San Francisco. Iryna entered Starfleet Academy in 2379. She adapted quickly to Academy life and, to her own mild surprise, found much of the core curriculum relatively easy to master. While this allowed her to excel, it also left her frequently under-stimulated. The resulting boredom occasionally expressed itself in acts of mischief. The most notable of these occurred in 2383, during her final year, when as a "senior prank", Iryna and a small group of fellow cadets commandeered the Captain's Yacht of the Sovereign-class starship USS Independence. The vessel, named Pass and Stow, had been landed on Academy grounds while the ship's commanding officer, Captain Deckard, was serving as a guest lecturer. Under cover of night, the cadets took the yacht on an unauthorized "pleasure cruise," with Iryna at the controls. They flew low over San Francisco and several other Earth cities before returning the craft to its landing site without immediate detection. A week later, engineers aboard the Independence discovered that the yacht's flight logs had been altered, and an ensuing investigation quickly identified Iryna and her companions. Several members of the Academy Board argued for expulsion, however Captain Deckard, intervened on their behalf. Impressed by the technical skill and precision with which the cadets had executed the theft and return of the yacht, he advocated for a more measured response. The Board ultimately accepted his recommendation, and Iryna and the other cadets were spared expulsion, instead being sentenced to six weeks of intensive maintenance duty during the final weeks of the academic year, wherein they were tasked with servicing and repairing the Academy's training craft. Despite the seriousness of the infraction, Iryna completed her studies on schedule and she graduated with honors in 2383, ranking fifth in a class of 1,420 cadets. She was then commissioned as an Ensign and given her first assignment. 2383-2385: First Assignment: Starbase 211 Upon receiving her commission in 2383, Ensign Nakhimova was assigned as a duty pilot to Starbase 211, located near the Cardassian border in the Minos Korva Sector. The posting was not what she had envisioned for the beginning of her Starfleet career. Nevertheless, she approached the assignment with professionalism. Her primary duties involved piloting Starfleet runabouts on escort missions into Cardassian space, supporting the ongoing relief efforts to aid the Cardassian population in the aftermath of the Dominion War. During this period, Iryna became thoroughly proficient with the flight systems of the Talon-class runabout USS Lena (NCC-83208), which was permanently assigned to Starbase 211. She developed a particular attachment to the vessel and took to addressing its computer as "Olga," a nickname drawn from her paternal grandmother, after detecting what she regarded as a stubborn quality in the computer's vocal responses. In 2384, while escorting a relief convoy, Iryna's runabout came under attack during an Orion Syndicate raid. She played an active role in defending the convoy before the Lena was disabled and left adrift. The incident left her with severe injuries that ultimately required the implantation of an artificial liver. For her wounds sustained in the line of duty, she was awarded the Starfleet Purple Heart. In 2385, Iryna was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and received orders for reassignment. 2385-2388: Second Assignment: USS Sutherland NCC-72015 Now Lieutenant Junior Grade, Iryna was assigned to the Nebula-class starship USS Sutherland as a Junior Flight Control Officer. The posting came despite her formal request for assignment to a smaller, more maneuverable vessel. Unbeknownst to her, an earlier communication in which she had assertively requested the position of Chief Flight Control Officer aboard the USS Defiant-a post that was not even available-had been viewed by the Starfleet Assignment Board as presumptuous in tone. Her assignment to the much larger Sutherland was intended, in part, to broaden her perspective and instill a greater appreciation for the full range of duties and platforms within the fleet. In 2386, the Sutherland was ordered into The Maelstrom, a little-explored cosmic nebula spanning portions of the Betazed and Risa sectors, as part of a Federation peace-keeping mission. The deployment marked the first significant contact with the Kessok since the Federation's initial encounter with the species a decade earlier. The mission had been initiated at the request of the Kessok themselves, who were suffering repeated attacks from rogue Klingon forces seeking vengeance for events that had occurred during that earlier contact. During the mission, the Sutherland responded to a distress call from a disabled Kessok vessel. Iryna was selected as part of the away team sent aboard to assist with repairs and to help pilot the ship back to a Kessok port. While en route, both the Kessok vessel and the Sutherland came under attack by Klingon ships. Iryna took the controls of the damaged Kessok craft and piloted it throughout the ensuing engagement. After the battle, the vessel was successfully returned to Kessok space. The Kessok Admiralty there informed the Federation party that the ship held a place of particular reverence among their people-functioning in many ways as a flagship-and that its safe return would meaningfully advance relations between the Kessok and the Federation. For her actions as part of the away team, Iryna and her fellows were awarded the Federation Medal of Peace. In 2388, she was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and received orders for reassignment when the Sutherland was ordered to return for refitting.
