Background

Born to a salvaging family, Dagh grew up shuffling between starbases and civilian freighters around the Alpha Quadrant. He's no Starfleet Academy genius but his schooling in the cargo bay taught him how to take apart just about any ship in the quadrant, not to mention how to keep a ship together. By far his favorite duty was working on "project ships", shuttle-sized ships needing to be rebuilt from the ground up. To his dismay his family never let him keep a ship for himself: "not enough room in the bay" they would say, but that only made him dream. Of the Dominion War, the Braffin family was just about its only beneficiary; salvage ballooned as the conflict raged on, although on more than one occasion the family freighter came under fire from Dominion forces. Dagh, still only a child, had never seen craft so advanced: not only the new Starfleet designs, but the otherworldly Dominion technology even the best engineers in the family couldn't explain. He developed a wider fascination with the war and followed the news eagerly, not quite yet appreciating that thousands were dying with each passing day. Not until 2381, that is. While salvaging the remains of a Dominion War battle, the Braffins' ship hit a forgotten polaron mine. Everything in the cargo bay was blown out into space in the breach, among it Dagh's only brother. After a few minutes they managed to get the transporter back online, but the damage was already done: Dagh's brother had to have his lungs replaced, followed by several months of physical therapy at a starbase. A furious Dagh blamed his mother's recklessness for the accident. She took an excessive risk leading them into a battlefield, and for what? So her family could take the hits like cannon fodder? Deeply hurt by both the accident and Dagh's words, she retired from leadership, leaving her husband in her place. The freighter was repaired in just a few weeks, but the hole in the family would remain for years. Eager to get away and have a fresh start but not gifted enough for the Academy, Dagh enlisted in Starfleet as soon as he came of age. He spent his first year in Deep Space 9's operations department maintaining runabouts before getting promoted to a place on USS Stavanger, a survey cruiser. It was there he finally completed flight school and became a shuttle pilot, his true aspiration. Following his promotion to NCO, Dagh applied for a transfer to the more prestigious Firesword, a patrol vessel operating covertly along the Romulan border. He was accepted, but the problems began almost immediately. The young Petty Officer was too comfortable in his new uniform, barking orders at crewmen with just a few less months of experience while questioning every little decision made by his superiors. The breaking point came on a reconnaissance mission near the neutral zone. Although the details are not available on the public record, suffice to say he disobeyed an order and the results were nearly disastrous, so much so that he was demoted and reassigned to a less sensitive assignment. Dagh's confidence was shaken by the Firesword incident, so much so that he's been contemplating resignation while en route to his next post. Is this yet another failed life, or will he find renewed purpose on the Vanguard?

Personality Profile

At first brush he's abrasive, temperamental, overly critical even by Tellarite standards, but those who get to know him find themselves with a fiercely loyal and protective friend. He might also be described as arrogant, although in the weeks following his demotion he's been uncharacteristically reserved. He has an annoying habit of telling others how to do their jobs, especially officers.
